Lord of the Flies: Journal #6

Chapter: The Beast from Air

Perspective: Simon

The 'Beastie'

Turned out, I was right. The so-called beastie everyone is interminable afraid of is really just all the evil that's in all of us. We all get waxy, and start flailing our minds everywhere and thinking about the impossible- but the evil, that's what is scaring everyone. Both Jack and Ralph have been installing all this fear in all the boys on this island. They're making it seem like Leviathan was here on the island and was going to painfully kill us all. That's exactly what Jack wants us to think. He wants us to go let him try to kill this thing and make him the big, amazing, smart, strong one who got to stand on the rocks with the guano (I don't know why he would want to...), and not Ralph.
Anyway, last night, the twins, Sam and Eric, they were supposed to be watching the fire, but they unfortunately fell asleep. When they woke, they thought that they saw the beastie. They said that they saw the dreaded monster in the shadows of the forest. They ran back as fast as they could (they reported that the beastie was chasing them in the forest, and that they barely made it to the shelters) and woke up Ralph to tell him what they saw. Ralph was startled, and he reacted quickly by calling a meeting to discuss the matter.
At the meeting, Jack sort of decided himself that he was going to lead the hunt for the beastie, and that Piggy and the little ones should stay behind. I felt bad for Piggy, being so overweight on a stranded island must make it hard for him to do the everyday things that we all do with ease, like climb the trees to get fruit, and running as fast as we do through the forest, when he can only go about half the speed we can. Jack emphasized his condition quite well at the meeting. Jack, using a wooden spear, set out with Ralph and all us other boys (except Piggy and the little ones) and we went on the hunt for the beastie.
After a while of walking, we got to a part of the island that no one had ever explored before, and Ralph made the decision that he would go alone. Jack ended up going with him ('m not sure how that worked out) and they went together to hunt the beastie.
While they were gone, some of the boys thought that it would be fun to build a fort, and when Ralph and Jack got back, Ralph got really mad. It must be hard for him to control so many crazy, wild boys...
