Breaking Though- post 6

Quote 1: "He has," Papa answered wearily. "This life is killing us all." His eyes watered. He bit his lower lips and walked away. ~Francisco Jimenez and Papa page 152

Response 1: I thought this related back to one of the questions. The one that talked about their new life in America. I thought this related directly to that because Papa is talking about how their life in America is killing them all, especially Frankie because of all the hard labor that they do to earn a living. It really got me thinking when Papa said this because he had been in constant pain almost the whole book, so for him to say that was really thought-provoking.
I had a personal connection to this because my grandma used to say that all the time. She'd always exaggerate everything, and she'd say things were killing her, or Oh! This life is killing me! I thought it was funny that Papa said this when she says it all the time, too.
Question 1: How has Papa's attitude toward everything effect your outlook on the book? (He's making the book a little more down-to-Earth for me because tons of parents are like him)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quote 2: "You look like a priest," Papa said, chuckling." ~Papa page 182
Response 2: This quote really got me going. I thought it was really funny how throughout the whole book, the author has tied in religious things that the family still carries from their old country. Also, when Frankie is so surprised that some people didn't vote for Kennedy because he's Catholic, I thought it was funny. The family being Catholic was a tie from their homeland and it, too, directly correlated with the question about what they held on to from their home country, because they brought their religion from Mexico to America, and still practice it.
If I had immigrated to America, I too would carry out my traditions and religions. I wouldn't assimilate completely to my new country's religions and cultures, I'd want to keep some of the old life in me, like the family did.
Question 2: Did you like the way the book ended?
Quote#1-
I agree on how you said that America has been killing the Jimenez family as in like they have been working really hard to earn a little bit of money. I also think that Fransisco's father complains too much and he needs to start being less negative and kind of be more positive because his attitude is like really getting annoying.
Question#1-
Pa's attitude is really annoying because he is always in a bad mood but I still like the book I just hate it when Papa gets in a bad mood because it's like really annoying.
Quote#2-
I also thought it was funny when Papa said that. I also like how the Jimenez family are still practicing their religion which they carried from their home country.
Question#2-
I did like the way the book ended. I like how the author tied the whole story together at the end.
Quote#1-
I also think that this shows how kids at school treat Fransisco. They don't treat him bad but they don't socialize with him either. I also think that this made Fransisco really happy because now he has someone to talk to.
Question#1-
Yes I remember when I was new here at HTM I had like three friends but then one of those friends introduced me to one of their friends and now that person that they introduced me to is my best friend.
Quote#2-
I agree. I think it's unfair how Roberto's girlfriend's father treats Roberto and doesn't let her date him because he is Mexican. I also think his girlfriend's father should judge him by his character but not by his race.
Question#2-
Not exactly me but it happened to my friend. Some kids called my friend a racist name and offended her name which was not cool.
Quote#1: I think that this is a very good quote because as you said it relates directly to one of the questions. I think that he is right that they work really hard and barely make a living.
Question#1: I think that papa's attitude is bad. He is always in a bad mood and it makes everyone else around him suffer.
Quote#2: I think that this is a interesting quote because papa is always in a bad mood but in this quote he is actually making a joke. So I think that this quote is rare because of the papa usually acts.
Question#2: I thought it was okay. over all I liked this book I liked how it mostly took place at school. So I could relate to Francisco.
Quote#1- I thought this quote was totally about what you said. Very thought-provoking and to me just very sad quote because of the describtions in the quote talking about how he bit his lip and his eyes watered. Very nice quote to chose especially for the last post.
Question#1- I think papa's attitude effected me especially because now I realize that people on earth sometimes act mean and cruel like papa and that now my outlook has changed since the begining from " its just a book " to " This happens to people in the world we live in."
Quote#2- I felt this quote was like a opinion that papa thought. Just felt like it was papa's opinion and not really a fact. If you think about it, to some people that could be a little mean but to other people it could be a great compliment.
Question#2- I mostly like the way it ended. Gave me a little bit of a shock in some parts but overall i think this book ended in a way that made me think abot the book as a whole. It made me look at each aspect of the book instead of just an ending.
