Breaking Through - Post 4

Quote 1: "Roberto and I thanked him and went home excited. Papá will be proud of us, I thought." ~Francisco Jimenez page 88

Response: This quote made me think about how much these boys want to impress and befriend their Papá. I thought it was really interesting how much they wanted him to be proud of them. They want him to be proud of them for finding jobs, and when they tell him, he doesn't show very much emotion, which made me sad, as well as Francisco and Roberto. Also, there are a lot of other times when Francisco begs for his father's approval. He desparately seeks his love the whole book, and you really see it now in the book, when his father is in constant pain and is always complaining and in bad moods. I think it shows how much Francisco wants to be respected.

Question: Did you notice the same thing as me? Or did you think of something else when you read this?

Quote 2: "I liked the assignment, but it was harder than I expected. I thought of writing about being deported, but I did not want my teacher to know that my family had crossed the border illegally and that I was born in Mexico." ~Fancisco Jimenez page 97

Response: I thought this was really sad, and a huge part of this book, and the last one. Being deported has greatly impacted Francisco and his family because they don't want anyone to know that they are really born in Mexico. It could effect who hires them, who would want to befriend them, and some opportunities that would pass them up if they were exposed. I thought it was depressing that they have to go through this every day that they live in America.

Question: How would you deal with having to live like this?

Quote#1: I liked your quote you picked. I agree with you I think that their main goals in life is to make money and to impress their dad. I think that this quote also shows that Francisco has good manners and is kind to people.

Question#1: I noticed the same thing. That they really want to impress their dad. Also that he wants his dad's approval.

Quote#2: I think that this quote really shows how he feels about the other kids knowing he is a immigrant. I think that he also has some trouble in school. I also agree with you that it is sad and that this problem of being deported really impacted him and his life.

Question#2: I would also like him keep it a secret from others and not tell anyone or give them hints that I was living like that. I would also feel scared and embarrassed.

Quote#1-
I agree with you on how Fransisco wants to impress his father and I think that Fransisco likes to impress his father because he likes to feel loved but his father is kind of strict and I think that makes Fransisco want to impress him more.

Question#1-
I noticed the same thing as you did how you find it interesting how much they want to impress their father. I also found that interesting.

Quote#2-
I agree with you on how you said Fransisco doesn't want anybody to know that he crossed the border illegally because he is insecure about the whole thing. I would also be very insecure if I would experience something like that.

Question#2-
As I said I would be very insecure about a situation like that so I would most likely keep it a secret. It would really affect me because having to live like that would really affect my life because fearing of getting caught.
